We hired Phil as our architect on a large scale remodel and he completely reimagined the space. It was a challenging footprint to work with but his vision transformed our home and we are thrilled with the results!

Phil Rossington was the right choice for our home renovation project, which wrapped up in 2023. We found Phil after having spent quite a bit of time with another architect and being disappointed with her resistance to some of our key preferences. We checked out Phil’s online portfolio before contacting him and saw that it included a variety of attractive elements spread across several different projects we thought could be adapted for our project. After our first meeting with Phil, we hired him to take over our project, which was still in the schematic design phase. His extensive experience in San Francisco was an important consideration, but the deciding factor was Phil’s communication style. During the whole journey through design, permitting, bidding, and construction, Phil contributed creative ideas that we incorporated to very good effect. He dove deeply into materials selection and introduced us to suppliers we hadn’t discovered on our own ever after countless hours of online search. Critically, when we hit him with unconventional requests, Phil’s patient, open, positive, thoughtful responses drove us toward jointly agreeing how best to satisfy them. We interviewed four contractors introduced by Phil, two of whom he had worked with previously on completed projects. We hired one of the two others, who turned out to be a solid professional. Phil’s heavy engagement during construction helped immensely in getting the best quality out of the contractor. Our house isn’t large, but the renovation was fairly extensive — five walls were moved or removed, and all electrical, plumbing, flooring, and drywall was replaced. If you have your heart set on building or renewing a home in the Bay Area, don’t miss the chance to meet Phil Rossington and talk through your project with him.

We worked with Rossington Architecture on a major, down-to-the-studs remodel. It didn't start out that way, but we encountered the nightmare scenario where we opened a wall, found a million issues, and realized we had to do a major gut job for safety reasons. New foundation, effectively tearing out an entire floor, black mold. Anything that could go wrong, did. Even within that nightmare situation, everything that could go RIGHT with Rossington Architecture went right. We got incredible service, a gorgeous design (that ended up being featured in some design mags!), a really considered thought partner who pushed back (in the best way) when needed, but also deeply heard us and was able to pull out what we MEANT from the often garbled ways we SAID it. Our house is beautiful and he pushed for so many smart design choices that we still marvel about to this day. All the things we love most about our new & improved house came from his design mind. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and he will absolutely be the person we call for our next project. Phil is the eye of every storm and made a difficult process somehow feel good.

Phil is a pleasure to work with - thoughtful, thorough and inventive. We hired Phil to do a top to bottom remodel of our 1906 arts and crafts San Francisco home. The vision was to update key living areas (kitchen, master bedroom) in a way that doesn't clash with the rest of the house. The best complement I can give him is that I didn't realize what a great job he had done until we moved into our newly remodeled home and experienced how wonderfully the new spaces worked and how well they harmonized with the parts of the house we had always loved. Highly recommended!

We hired Phil to design our home from scratch. Not only did he incorporate all of our needs and wants, he thought of so many additional, wonderful details that have made our new home an amazing, comfortable place to raise our family. We couldn’t be happier with the results. He was heavily involved from the first meeting where we conveyed our thoughts to the very end as the contractor and landscaper worked on the finishing details. Phil patiently went back-and-forth with us as we worked to finalize the plans. He helped us navigate the city/planning department, find engineers (civil, soil, etc.), and most importantly he was onsite to work closely with our contractor throughout the entire build to ensure the work was performed to our specifications. His attention to detail cannot be overstated. Phil is a wonderful, honest professional who we would highly recommend.

I worked with Phil on 2 different projects. First, a 3 unit building after a fire and then a 4 bedroom new house. Phil Rossington was my architect on a 3 unit building in the SF Marina after a fire. Phil is the best to work with - very creative, thorough, professional, honest and easy to work with. He was involved with the project until the end and I would highly recommend him. I would love to do another project with Phil!I would hire Phil again.

Phil has designed the last two homes I lived in. The first one I purchased directly from the contractor and loved Phil's design and sense of space. The second home he designed for me was a total build from the ground up of a 2 unit building in SF that was destroyed in a fire. I wanted to go in a different direction on this one and Phil came up with an amazing design. He is awesome to deal with and very straightforward. He made great suggestions some I listened to some I did not. To be honest most of the ones I didn't listen to I now regret. I didn't have the vision he had and wish I had been more open minded. I honestly cant say enough about the guy he is great

Phil has done several jobs for us, most recently a laundry room/pantry and backyard remodel. He created a combo grill enclosure and bench that we absolutely love. It keeps the wind at bay and is a great place for guests (or my husband) to sit and have a cocktail while I grill.

I have worked on 3 big projects with Phil which should tell you something in itself. The last one was a complete tear down and Phil helped me manage the project while I was on the East Coast. He is a complete professional, helped with some very creative solutions and is extremely easy to work with. He listens very well and helps the client hone in on exactly what he/she is thinking. His attention to detail is really strong as well. I get many people asking me who I used for my house. I recommend him unconditionally.

Phil is a very thoughtful architect. Our extensive remodel and addition turn out wonderfully. He was able to save us money by utilizing as much of existing structure as possible.

Rossington Architecture designed and brought into being our dream house! While we could only envision a bigger box with a few more rooms, Phil saw canted ceilings, skylights, bonus rooms, a relocated open flooplan kitchen/living room, a beautiful feature wall and more. Phil created a floorplan that fit our family needs perfectly, even finding room for a "media" room/kids play area that we hadn't expected. His design sense and attention to detail is impeccable and we got great advice and oversight on everything from stucco finish to trim to lighting. He worked with us to be sure the plan fit our budget and helped identify subs (for cabinets, engineering and flooring, for example) that would do the same. His expertise working with the planning department, and helping to manage the workflow of the whole project were key to a very successful on time project. Couldn't be happier!

Phil came to us based on the recommendation of a friend and we found him very professional and creative in translating our renovation expectations into reality. We found a sample in Phil’s portfolio of an upstairs expansion that had the look and feel we hoped to achieve in a new master suite built in a long vacant basement. Phil exceeded expectations in designing and working with our contractor to make the room better than we imagined. The project was especially difficult as we hired a contractor who quickly got in over his head. But Phil's diligence, patience, and attention to detail rubbed off on the contractor and the project turned our perfectly. Phill is creative and exhibited a great ability to translate our vision into a better reality than we could imagine. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to find another service provider (in any field) with Phil's skills. Needless to say, Phil is the only architect on our list if we need further work or are asked for a recommendation.

We hired Phil Rossington to be our architect when we gutted, and completely remodeled our house. The project took a little over a year and many, many decisions were made. Phil was absolutely instrumental in us, four years post remodel, being extremely happy with our home. He's a very skilled architect who helped us to organize our ideas, improved them, and ultimately came up with a design that really fit both our aesthetic and practical needs. In addition to Phil being a great architect, his down to earth, style made him an absolute pleasure to work with. He's a great communicator, efficient, responsive, and just a really nice guy. In the long year that we worked together, Phil was consistently a source of great support and a pleasure to work with. We recommend him highly!

"I hired Phil in 2005 for an extensive remodel of my top floor flat and was very pleased with both the process and result. He helped us stay within budget despite multiple unknowns and had great creative ideas for maximizing and opening up the space. He was very attentive all throughout the process and is incredibly detail oriented, which helped the contractors attend to the things they may have forgotten! The end product was fantastic and in keeping with the era of the building, yet with the modern amenities of today's living. I was so pleased, that I am working with him again on a design of a deck. We start construction tomorrow"

We bought a 2 bed/1 bath in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood. Good area, but house was old (not much done to it since its building back in 1920s), dark, cold, creeky, and too snug for our family of four. We wanted to remodel and expand to a 3/2. We talked to several architects -- we found Phil Rossington in a newspaper article that highlighted his work. We had not heard of him before. After our initial meeting to discuss what we were looking for, we had a good feeling about him. In the end, he was the right choice: He's smart, professional, honest and has a great eye for design. He drew up plans for basically a total makeover. The thing to know about Phil is that he's very detail-oriented. That seems to be his reputation among contractors. He thinks everything through, and can easily toggle from a macro view to a micro (down to the fixtures, which we relied on him to help us pick). So what you get is really the complete package (when it came to paints/stains, he deferred to his colleague Gale, a color consultant who also knocked it out of the ballpark with her choices). The end result? A beautiful house that's a pleasure to live in. It's bright (with skylights), warm, cozy, modern. It exceeded our expectations (and we had high expectations). We constantly get compliments from both friends and complete strangers (walking by). We often see people stop in front of our house and point (we're assuming for good reasons). Yes, with any remodel, cost is a concern. Phil offered lots of options and ideas on how to reduce expenses and manage our budget. We'd use his services again in a heartbeat. Rossington Architect comes with our highest recommendation. If you're like us, you only want to remodel once -- so do it right the first time. Go with Phil.

We hired Phil as our architect on a couple of renovation projects that we did on our home over the past few years. One a major renovation, joining two previously separate units on two different levels; and a redesign of the garden area with water feature (we ripped out a large deck and started from scratch). Phil is both creative and pragmatic, which combined with his years of architectural experience makes for great solutions that use the space well and work from a practical point of view. Both of these projects won awards, one for the renovation design, and one for the garden design. The renovation was even featured in the SF Chronicle. Phil is easy going, easy to work with and takes a lot of the hassle out of dealing with contractors and the city. I liked the fact that he runs a small "boutique" architectural shop and the very personalized service that we got as a result. I am very happy to recommend Phil as an excellent architect who will shepherd you through the process and produce a great end result.

Phil worked with us on a major remodel that took our house from an ugly box to the best looking house on the block, winning a Gold award for Best Exterior Face Lift from Qualified Remodeler magazine in the process. We also added square footage that made our living room, master bedroom and two bathrooms larger and more useable. His experience in working with the city made the process of getting the necessary permits very smooth, without the delays we had come to fear. He always kept the budget in mind, never proposing grandiose plans that we could not afford. His contacts in the contracting community were instrumental in helping us to find a contractor we were comfortable working with. Phil was always open to our ideas and incorporating them into his design. He was willing to help us pick out finishes where necessary, but also willing to work with finishes we picked out. He is very flexible and has a good eye for design. That makes him great at making the adjustments to plans that are necessitated by changing circumstances. When aspects of our window design required adjustments due to city regulations, Phil helped to ensure that not only did the windows meet the requirement, they looked great as well. When the old stain on our floors couldn’t be completely removed to allow a lighter stain, he suggested black which we would never have considered. The floors ended up looking amazing. When a bathroom wall was opened up, we discovered a pipe that hadn’t been anticipated. This caused the bathroom to be a foot or so smaller than anticipated. Phil suggested using part of the lost space for a cabinet that is almost floor to ceiling. That cabinet is beautiful and the room is more interesting than it would have been without it. He is attuned to how all aspects of the design will work together and the importance of getting the finishes just right. He never hesitated to say when he thought something wasn’t up to his high standards. He works well with contractors, effectively bridging the gap between our “vision” and the technical aspects needed to accomplish that vision.

I worked with Phil/Rossington Architecture for my home kitchen/bathroom remodel projec. I am thrilled with the end results. Phil was patient (we started the first set of plans and drawings in 2005) and flexible (balanced achieving a great design with what could be done physically and within my budget). He was a great collaborator and resource throughout the project - recommending contractors and vendors, working with the contractor, amending plans, etc. I would use Phil & Rossington Architecture again and recommend him and his work.

My wife and I hired Phil to do a complete renovation of our house in Noe. We interviewed a number of architects and chose Phil based on the following (a) he is a great guy, (b) we liked his style and previous work, (c) he 'fused' together the entire project and was broader than just the architecture/design and (d) he had great references. I'd highly recommend Phil and would without question hire him again in the future.

We hired Rossington Architecture to renovate our 1300 sq ft single family home in San Francisco. This was the first time we had done any type of remodel, and Phil was very helpful in walking us through the steps, connecting us with trustworthy general contractors and a structural engineer and providing some spreadsheets to keep track of the various finishes and fixtures that we would need to select and install. He and his team listened closely to what we wanted for the space and drew up plans that were even better than we imagined. They figured out how to give us a walk-in closet and how to expand the main bathroom to fit a double sink. In such a small house, these practical improvements made a world of difference for our every day living and for resale. Phil was very respectful of our budget and had his associate architect, whose hourly rate was less than his, do as much of the work as possible to keep his fees down. After the remodel was complete, I've reached out to Phil with various questions, and he's always been responsive and helpful. He's even come back to talk through the logistics and options for putting on an addition in the future. If we decide to do that or to remodel a different house, Phil will be our first call.
