A complete interior rebuild of a classic 1890 San Francisco Victorian

About The Project

This 1890 San Francisco Victorian, which had undergone previous additions and foundation work, was in serious need of an upgrade. The original layout presented several challenges: the kitchen felt like an afterthought, the ground-level bedroom was isolated from the rest of the home, and the primary bedroom was far from ideal. The task was to thoughtfully rework the space while preserving the integrity of the home's historic Victorian character.

To achieve this, the compartmentalized spaces were carefully opened up to create better connections between rooms, while still maintaining clear boundaries and a sense of architectural order. The result is a modern, rational layout with a gracious flow that honors the home's history. The primary bedroom has been transformed into a comfortable, cohesive suite rather than a fragmented series of rooms. The lower level is now fully integrated into the rest of the house, shedding its former identity as a separate apartment. And with improved access to the rear yard, the outdoor space now feels like a natural extension of the home’s interior.
